PAWS and Pet Food Pantry: Providing Hope for Low-Income Pet Owners

It's no secret that pet food can be quite expensive; but have you ever been forced to choose between feeding yourself or feeding your pet?  It's a heartbreaking problem to be faced with but this is the situation that many pet owners have found themselves in during tough economic times.  Just as difficult, what happens when your pet suddenly falls ill and you can't afford to get them treated?

The Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society (BEBHS) is proud to offer two community programs that service low-income, disabled and senior animal guardians and their pets in the East Bay.

The first program is our Pet Food Pantry which is offered once a month to low-income residents and homeless pet owners of Contra Costa and Alameda County.  Dog and cat food that gets donated to BEBHS is redistributed to members of the community and their pets who are most in need.  Enrollment for this program is at an all-time high, and donations of canned cat and dog food and kibble are needed more than ever.  We accept open bags of kibble as long as it's not stale or expired, and unexpired cans.

The second program is PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support)/East Bay which helps low-income disabled and/or senior pet owners care for their pets.  We believe that cats and dogs offer invaluable companionship and a person shouldn't have to miss out on such an incredible bond because of a physical or financial hardship.

Clients of PAWS/East Bay not only receive pet food each month, but also: an annual veterinary stipend, flea medicine, transportation to vet appointments and are eligible for volunteer services such as dog walking and home delivery of pet supplies.

If you're interested in contributing to either of these programs, monetary and/or in-kind donations can either be mailed and/or dropped off to:

If you would like an application to become a client of either of these programs or would simply like to know more, please email pawseb@berkeleyhumane.org or call 510-845-7735 x 205

Pet Food Pantry is on the last Saturday of every month from 11am-1pm and is located in our warehouse which is around the corner from our shelter.

  1. Pet food or Home Food For Dogs is plant or animal material intended for consumption by pets. It can be found in pet stores and supermarkets, it is usually specific to the type of animal, such as dog food or cat food. Most meat used for nonhuman animals is a byproduct of the human food industry.

  4. Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”. Party Animal Pet Food Inc.

  7. Always make sure the item is described as "complete" on the container. It's a legal phrase that denotes that the meal has been formulated and tested to fully satisfy the nutritional needs of that species. Treats that with the designation "supplemental" should be given in addition to premium pet food as available at PetCareRx.
